CHAPTER X. MY THIRD SEMESTER AT KIU
MY THIRD SEMESTER AT KIU
In early July I reported for my third semester of study at Kampala International University (KIU), it was such a very fruitful period full of academics, leadership and community- based activities. We started with the cancer awareness run, sensitizing the public on how to avoid and prevent cancer as KIU was launching the first private cancer institute in Uganda. There were also some community outreach activities to our nearby market center and the streets where we did some cleaning to promote awareness about keeping a clean environment, I fully and actively participated in these activities since I am so passionate about promoting public awareness and saving the population at risk of such life-threatening conditions.

As we continued with the semester, we had a number of Assessments regarding the class works, where we had the Random Assessment Tests (RATs) and the Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs) at different intervals of the semester, I am glad I was able to excel in all of them mainly because I reported on time for the semester and I attended every lecture consistently, We also conducted several presentations that required extensive research, it was quite easy for me to organize since I could easily find out information using my laptop and organized well-researched and high quality presentations that earned me some marks. I also started a discussion group with my classmates to specifically share knowledge and help each other understand particular concepts, sometimes some of our fellows return to campus late due to tuition issues and shortage of any other funding required that’s why I got this idea of having a way to discuss with them about the areas they missed.
The KIUPSA pharmacy week, the period of fun, unity, community service and more studies outside classes was one of the most outstanding periods in the pharmacy school this third semester, we had a run for medicine on day one of the week, aimed at sensitizing the public about pharmacovigilance and drug safety. Day two was all about botanical garden exhibition to see and appreciate different medicinal plants and how they are used to treat what particular condition. Day three was dedicated to the debate and quiz competition day where I actively participated in the quiz competition about the current trends in pharmacy practice this helped to boost my knowledge about pharmacy, critical thinking and professional communication. I also participated in an essay writing competition about the same theme where I also received a certificate of appreciation and it also widened my knowledge about pharmacy. Day four concluded with the KIUPSA conference, which was our final activity regarding the KIUPSA week, where we had presentations and discussions by experts on current pharmaceutical and healthcare topics.

Following the KIUPSA week, elections were held for new association leaders. I was selected by my class and officially nominated by the KIUPSA Independent Electoral Commission to contest for the position of KIUPSA Treasurer. Although initially unopposed but later another class also forwarded a candidate which made the competition tight but due to my sounding ideas regarding the development of our association that I shared with the pharmacy students during the open air campaigns they found out a remarkable capability in me regarding money handling and I was fully elected as the new Kampala International University pharmacy student’s association Treasurer for the year 2025/2026, It was really a great achievement for me that the whole pharmacy school could be able to identify me as the potential leader regarding the proper handling of our association funds. I will be swearing in the next semester and will immediately assume responsibilities I have to carry on regarding my leadership position.
Beyond academics and leadership I also organized community service activities with some of my friends we were able to reach out to some of the school going children and provided them with some books, pencils and pens to help them with their studies, purchased using some of the money from the donations you gave me, as I have also experienced similar conditions in my childhood education where my parents could not manage to provide me with all the requirements for school. If I get some money with me, I always feel happy to help someone regarding his/her schooling and scholastic materials. I was also able to take part in organizing a fundraising for our fellow students at KIU in her 5th semester pursuing a diploma in pharmacy, her mother the only supporter of her education was struggling with serious illnesses and she couldn’t raise the tuition for the semester, she had lost hope but through collective efforts from fellow students, we raised the required tuition in a short time, restoring hope and enabling her to continue with her studies.

We also held the interuniversity HIV awareness conference at KIU, It was organized by the ministry of health to sensitize university students about all the ways of avoiding and preventing HIV ,It was mainly attended by selected student leaders from most of the Universities within the country, who were required to take back the information to the fellow students and community members in the areas where we stay, this was mainly aimed at reducing the prevalence of HIV/AIDs among University students and different parts of the country where they stay.
This marked the end my third semester
